Boat lift repair on Pamlico Sound

Pamlico Sound is the body of water most of this island chain actually lives on. It is Pamlico Sound: 80 mi long, 15–30 mi wide — the largest sound on the East Coast of the United States, 80 miles long and 15 to 30 miles wide, sitting behind Hatteras and Ocracoke and draining to the Atlantic through Hatteras and Ocracoke Inlets. Every pier, lift, and dock on that waterfront works in open sound water miles from the mainland, and the repair call that comes from a Pamlico shoreline is shaped by that geography before it is shaped by anything mechanical.

The width of this water is the first thing it does to your dock, because the rules measure length against it. The use standard limits a pier to no more than Pier length limited to one-fourth of water body width of the width of the natural water body — so on the open Pamlico, where the water body is fifteen to thirty miles across, the one-fourth rule never binds and the ordinary distance limits govern instead. But the same rule is decisive one cove over: the canals, basins, and narrow guts off the sound, including the mainland-side channels around Stumpy Point and Manns Harbor, are exactly the narrow water bodies where one-fourth of the width is the short answer. A Pamlico waterfront owner needs to know which of the two waters their lot fronts before believing any number a contractor quotes for reach.

The second thing the sound does is decide what may float over it, because so much of its bottom is designated. Floating piers and floating docking facilities — floating lifts included — are allowed over Primary Nursery Areas, shellfish beds, or submerged aquatic vegetation only with Floating lifts/docks: 18-in clearance at low water of water between the bottom of the structure and the substrate at normal low water. The Pamlico's nursery areas and grass beds are not scattered exceptions on this map; they are a major part of what the designations exist to protect, and a lift project on this shoreline runs the designation check as a matter of course.

The third thing it does is weather. A sound fifteen to thirty miles wide builds real fetch: the same wind that riffles a sheltered cove stacks four-foot chop against a west-facing Hatteras village pier, and every named storm in the season has the whole width of the water to gather before it arrives at your lift. The repairs this side of the island concentrates on follow from that — motor housings that have taken spray, switches and receivers corroded by salt-laden wind, cradles and cables stressed by boats bouncing at the lift in a blow, and the wiring runs at the end of long piers that we bring licensed electricians for under G.S. 87-43.
